Tengu’s Gambit Demo Soon!

Where the Game is At

Tengu’s Gambit is in a good place. I have a menu structure in place, six levels – two of which are completely playable – player leveling system, card leveling system, card shops, optional bosses that feed into a permanent meta progression system, elemental attacks and weaknesses, character specific mechanics, a core collection of music and sounds… it’s becoming a game.

And I’m close to letting folks play it.

And that is scary.

Is this fun at all? Have I overlooked super obvious mechanics and quality of life features? Is the music good at all? Is it too hard? Too easy?

I’m excited to find out.

Recent Highlights

The latest system is the Tengu system. Each island has its own option boss in the form of a tengu that flies around the map. Defeating them rewards you with a range of permanent stat buffs, permanent unique cards, lower ki costs, higher ki gains, and permanent increased damage to and a reduction of damage from other Tengu. I’ve only designed two of them so far for the demo: The fire island of Kagero and the spirit island of Mizuho.

Mizuho's spirit tengu attacking with its spirit strike.

Also, how many screens is too many screens? They just seem to grow out of the wall at this point.

What’s Next

I’m in full QA mode for this upcoming demo. The goal is two levels with all the bells and whistles. Which… oh, yeah: includes a save system. Probably the last major system to build before it’s all just content and balancing and tweaking. Ugh, how am I gonna save all this stuff? How do you save a list of scriptable objects?

Anyway, that’s for future me to figure out.
